RE: Status of AAU Japanese STI Project
This message is to bring you up to date on the AAU
proposed project on coordinated management and
distribution of Japanese scientific and technical
serials in North America.
In Austin, a number of directors of ARL libraries
met to discuss the project. Don Simpson summarized
a proposal from the Center for Research Libraries
to design and implement such a demonstration
project. Project scope was discussed and consensus
emerged that an initial focus should be in areas of
applied science. The following topics were
suggested a priorities: artificial intelligence,
biotechnology, robotics, computer sciences.
Information was also exchanged on the following:
* Japan Resource Sharing: an infrastructure project
conducted by Ohio State, UC-Berkeley, Columbia,
Duke, and MIT
* Library of Congress Japan Documentation Center
*emerging services by document delivery suppliers
*an upcoming NTIS/JICST Conference
The conclusion of the Austin briefing was:
* positive interest in pursuit of the project
* appreciation for the Center's initiative to provide
an organizational base for the project; and
*agreement that the scope should be narrowly
focused to allow a reasonably quick start to the
initiative.
Several developments have unfolded since the Austin
discussions.
1. Electronic List
Those at the briefing, plus others who expressed
interest before or since, have been included in an
electronic list called ARL-Japan@cni.org.
2. The Center for Research Libraries is drafting an
action plan for the project. In addition, CRL is
checking the National Diet Library list of serials
to determine the number of titles that fall into
the tentatively defined scope of the project.
3. The National Library of Medicine has agreed to
provide a list of Japanese imprint serial titles
that NLM currently collects and if these titles are
indexed.
4. Jim Wyatt has contacted a sampling of faculty
at U. Rochester to gather their response to the
project. He has identified user support and is
preparing a summary statement about their
priorities for access to Japanese STI.
5. Jutta Reed-Scott has identified a small working
group to advise on the development of the demo
concept into a project proposal and work plan.
Members of the working group include:
Don Simpson, CRL, Chair
Maureen Donovan (East Asian Collection, Ohio State
U. , and coordinator of Japanese Text Digitizing
Project)
Jim Wyatt, U. of Rochester
Jay Lucker,MIT
Barbara Peterson (3M Corp.)
tentative: Phyllis Genther Yoshida, Director, Japan
Technology Project, NTIS
tentative: Richard Schlichting, Dept. of Computer
Science, U.of Arizona
tentative: Sachie Noguchi, East Asian
Bibliographer, U. Pittsburgh
Amy Vladeck Heinrich, Director, C.V. Starr East
Asian Library, Columbia U., and Chair NCC
Those of the working group who will be at the 4th
Annual NTIS/JICST Conference held in Boston July
14-15, will meet over lunch on the 15th for an
information meeting. A full day working group
meeting will be held later during the summer for
more detailed discussion of the project
Staff contact: For the present, Jutta Reed-Scott
and I are jointly staffing this initiative. Let
either of us know if additional information would
be useful or if you are aware of other people or
organizations that we should contact.
