If you're using GNU Emacs and ange-ftp on a unix system, FTP is about as hard
as opening up files on your local machine. I regularly work on
files scattered over a number of machines accessed through FTP
and it's not really noticable except for delays in file transfers
that the files are on remote systems. I believe that similar
approaches exist in one form or another for mac, NeXT, and perhaps
other systems.

Most 1st generation FTP clients are pretty straightforward, command
line oriented, relatively awful user interfaces. More modern clients
hide a lot of the work and show the remote machine as an ordinary
file system. You can argue about how hard it is to navigate through
a hierarchical file system, and some will rightly say that it can
be confusing and difficult...that's another set of problems entirely.
