Navigating the Internet
A Hands-On Workshop
Tuesday, February 4, 1992 - 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Clark University, Worcester, MA

A.	Where Do You Start?

An often asked question is "How do I get started with Internet and
where do I begin?" The "whys" and "wheres" are explained in an overview
presentation while also demonstrating potential user applications .

B.	Internet Mail

While Internet mail is the most frequently-used subset of tools in
Internet, often people do not know how or where to begin. A number of these
sources will be explored through both discussion and hands-on
demonstration. At the conclusion of this session, each participant will be
expected to log into an account and be able to utilize WHOIS DDN, electronic
mail, and Freenet.

C.	File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

The File Transfer Protocol subset of Internet is frequently
misunderstood.
Participants in this session will learn to access several FTP sites, GET
files, move from directory to directory, "exploring" the specific node on
which they are logged. The primary focus will be on what kinds of materials
are available at these FTP sites. The McGill University server mechanism,
Archie, will also be displayed with a demonstration of its functionality.

D.	TELNET (Remote Logons)

The discussion during this session will focus on exploring resources such
as international library access, campus-wide information systems, and various
bulletin board services that are available. The demonstration will include
connecting to a variety of library systems both national and international.
Supercomputer access will also be discussed.

E. Instructors: Jerry Olson, Director of Information Systems, and Steve
Vieira, Manager of the Information Resource Center, from Clark University
will discuss, demonstrate, and propose various methods for supporting the
Internet set of user tools as applied in a smaller university/college
context. Throughout this past year, they have devised a number of different
training approaches and discovered alternative means of developing network
support tools which both introduce and entice users on the Clark campus.
This hands-on demonstration workshop session is a culmination of one year's
worth of work in devising the most effective means for guaranteeing user
success and excitement on a small campus for the wide variety of information
resources available through the international Internet.
