the ur-source of that informatino is form the USPS, they
will sell you a CD-ROM with it all there down to zip+4.
private companies will sell you mailing list merge or
verfication s/w. the direct mail market is the likely
audience.

Barry Shein's "Open Book Initiative" at obi.std.com:/obi
(anonymous FTP) has a zipcode list that has names and places
for 5 digit zips. Because of NSF rules Barry's system is
only available from CIX member networks or nets that have
bilateral agreements with Alternet.

A search in the WAIS "comp.archives" server also notes the
possible existence of a database on zeus.mgmt.purdue.edu
in the /pub directory, I make no guarantees that it would be
there. An archie search for "zipcode" turned up a pointer
to the mirrors/msdos/dbase directory on wuarchive.wustl.edu,
and some WAIS searching on the "uunet" and "wuarchive" servers
showed that the OBI stuff is in fact on UUNET (in ftp.uu.net:doc/obi).

I'd look at both "zipcodes.zip" and "zipcode.txt.Z" and see
which one suits your needs better. They are each about 300k
compressed.

ps. this was a fairly easy search given archie and the WAIS
comp.archives database.
