To: Celine Alvey <ALVEY@USCVM.BITNET>,

Ah, your voice sounds good even on EMail. Thank you kindly, and, yes,
another birthday has past, and it is time to decide what age will be
my equivalent of Jack Benny's 39--the one that I hang on to no matter
what. I mean, 52 does sound--well, like several.
I did celebrate in one unique way--or rather found a new reason to
celebrate. The evening of the 26th I chaired my last meeting of the
Advisory Committee. I will convene them again so they can elect a new
officer, but I am out of there. It has gone on long enough.
I think your upcoming courses sound fascinating and you should hang
on to all material. Did you know that Bill Heywood and I taught a
course on the 1890s some years ago? I will be curious to see how this
one compares. I remember units dealing with the big railroad strike
and (I think) Hull House. I probably have our old syllabus somewhere.
I will also be interested in the other two.
I assume that at some point your old advisor is your advisor no
more, right? Braude & Ksylbs take over? When do you declare the
major and when is the changing of the guard?
There was a critical article on Bly in last Sunday's NY
Times--written by a woman who doesn't care for his attitude toward
women. I haven't read it, but I plan to--and you might want to take a
look.
Can't think of any more news from here. This term is over which
means that my reading time is half over and the reading amount
certainly is not half over so i think I had best return to it or them.
And on the weather--we are creatures of the light, aren't we? I
noticed a lot of vague depression here this year during the long fog.
  Talk to you later.
