Subject: Is This Advertising?
John Garrett posted one of Michael Hart's regular
advertisements (below) telling us how to get the
latest texts from Project Guttenberg, a message that
many of us have seen at least once on other lists to
which we subscribe.
I could add a variety similar postings of available
jobs in specialized areas, posted regularly on all
sorts of lists, and newsgroups.
Or I could point you to The Chronicle of Higher Ed's
gopher, ACADEME THIS WEEK, which has 400-800 job ads
every week.
They are ALL advertising.
I've never heard a complaint about Mr. Hart's
advertising, nor of the job ads that appear on lists
and newsgroups, nor of the job ads The Chronicle runs
each week.
What makes some advertising inoffensive, and other
advertising offensive? If we can begin to answer this
question, we may have the beginning of our Purple
Paper.

The easiest way to get these files is to follow these instructions:
[exactly. . .Mac users, you will do better to TYPE these commands &
NOT to point and click. . .my experience is that these commands are
often CASE sensitive and that the Mac FTP emulators have windows to
enter your commands directly. . .if you have trouble with a point &
shoot operation, try entering the commands as written here]
ftp mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu

cd etext
cd etext93
