I recently became aware of an IETF working group designing
the searching and locating extension for WebDAV known as
DASL <http://www.ics.uci.edu/pub/ietf/dasl/>. WebDAV
itself <http://www.ics.uci.edu/~ejw/authoring/> adresses
how to read and write properties on Web resources. The
property values are encoded as XML for interchange, though
the protocol does not constrain how they are stored.
Over the last month, we have seen a proof-of-concept for
representing Z39.50 in XML using XER (XML Encoding Rules),
described at <http://asf.gils.net/xer>. With this new
development, it becomes quite reasonable to look at
making DASL interoperable with GILS. In view of the huge
amounts of valuable content accessible through GILS and
Z39.50 generally, this would be a huge win!
If you are interested in the possible alignment of DASL
with GILS, you should subscribe to the DASL discussion list,
www-webdav-dasl@w3.org. To subscribe, send a message to
<www-webdav-dasl-request@w3.org> with "subscribe" in the
Subject.
