                D.W. Griffith's THE GIRL AND HER TRUST (1912)



Two events out of Los Angeles, worthy of note. One is a demonstration of
new technology enabling the re-contextualizing and staging of artworks on
the computer screen. This is at the Japan Foundation, Santa Monica, Oct 22.

The other is the latest in the American Film Institute's monthly video
streaming of American film classics. For this you don't have to be there.

Japanese Antiquities in Cyberspace


Mr. and Mrs. Joe D. Price are one of the major collectors of Japanese
classic arts outside of Japan.  His Shin'enkan Foundation is a private
museum located in Orange County and houses a large collection of
Edo-period scrolls and screens.  He was also one of the principles
behind the creation of the Japanese Pavilion at the Los Angeles County
Museum of Art.

Leaping into the digital arena, Mr. Price has pioneered a computerized
method of analyzing the priceless ancient art of Japan and recreating
the lighting environments the art would have been placed in by the ruling
Samurai class and the Imperial Family as well as restoring the original
color and luster of the artwork.

These digitalized treasures are a revolutionary way of experiencing art
as it was originally seen and intended by the artist who created them.
The presentation will draw on the Etsuko and Joe Price Collection to
demonstrate this innovative use of new technology.
