The 2001 series of Copyright Town Meetings, organized by the National
Initiative for a Networked Cultural Heritage, will continue April 25
with the second meeting, hosted by Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Copyright and intellectual property issues are becoming increasingly
important with the explosive growth of the Web and other digital
media. Please join us on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 for the Houston
Copyright Town Meeting.
As part of the National Initiative for a Networked Cultural Heritage
(NINCH) Copyright Town Meeting series, this gathering seeks to open
discussion among various educational and cultural constituencies
concerned with copyright issues: faculty members, librarians,
instructional technologists, museum and archives specialists, and
digital content providers.
We will consider questions of information ownership, access,
distribution, control, and marketing. Featured speakers include:
* Georgia Harper (developer of the Copyright Crash Course and
Manager, Intellectual Property Section of the University of Texas
System General Counsel's Office),
* Rodney Petersen (Director of Policy and Planning and Project
NEThics, Office of Information Technology at the University of
Maryland), and
* Tyler Ochoa (co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property
Law at the Whittier Law School).
Other speakers include
Dan Wallach, Department of Computer Science, Rice University
Geraldine Aramanda, Intellectual Property Manager and Archivist at
the Menil Collection
Rhoda Goldberg, chair of the legislative committee for the Texas
Library Association
Marshall Schott, Director, Educational Technology and Outreach at the
University of Houston,
Coe Miles, Associate General Counsel of Questia
Lee Hilyer, Interlibrary Loan Librarian at Rice's Fondren Library
The Copyright Town Meeting is sponsored by NINCH; Fondren Library of
Rice University; the University of Houston Libraries; and the Rice
University Center for the Study of Cultures.
The Town Meeting seeks to provide a fundamental overview of copyright
law and its implications for educational and cultural institutions,
examining the law's historical foundations, its evolution in an
increasingly digital environment, and current trends. Ample opportunity
will be provided for questions and discussion.
The morning session will address copyright fundamentals, as well as
the legal and technical dimensions of using devices to control access
to information.
During the afternoon sessions, speakers representing universities,
libraries, and museums will discuss the significance of copyright for
their communities.
Approaches to copyright--pursuing the open source model, upholding the
public domain, licensing electronic resources, and requesting permission
to use copyrighted materials--will be examined. In the Town Meeting
tradition, the conference will conclude with a lively and open dialogue
about the issues raised during the day.
Registration for the Houston Copyright Town Meeting is free. For dining
convenience, a box lunch will be available for $7. (The deadline to
