It certainly does, with one exception: the appearance of a conflict
of interest remains, as Rep. Bonoier charges. A public official cannot
freely engage in lucrative business contracts with those he is engaged
in regulating, specially when the stakes are so high as they are in
the case of Rupert Murdoch. This conflict must be better clarified
by independent examination, in my view.
We can rejoice that speaker-to-be Newt Gingrich has disclosed his
willingness to listen to critics, at least those within his own party.
But this improvement in the situation does not eliminate the cloud
produced by his original willingness to "go for the money" and the
remaining problems cannot now be swept under the table.
