Subject: Public Interest Meeting on Telecommunications Policy
I thought I would pass along the following notice from Leslie
Harris and Jill Lesser at People for the American Way about an
important public interest meeting on telecommunications policy.

PUBLIC INTEREST MEETING ON TELECOMMUNICATIONS POLICY
As the new Congress begins to take shape, it is important for
the public interest community to re-examine and shape its
approach to telecommunications policy. While, as many of you
know, we made significant headway in the last Congress on
access issues -- both public space and anti-redlining -- this
year presents a whole new ballgame. It is now even more
important that we establish a coherent and realistic message
and advocate as a united voice to the extent possible. We will
also likely be faced with significant and disturbing efforts to
control content along the information superhighway and we must
be ready to respond swiftly.
It is important to have a meeting as soon as possible, as there
is talk of legislative language being released by the
Republicans in the beginning of February. The meeting is
scheduled for Wednesday, January 18, 1995 at 3:00 p.m. at
People for the American Way, 2000 M Street, NW, Washington, DC.
Because we may be tight on space, we should appreciate it if
you could call and let us know if you or someone else from your
organization will attend. Please call Jill Lesser at (202)
467-2308. We look forward to seeing you there.
