Although Senator Pressler has withdrawn some of his questions regarding
NPR staff in his witch hunt for "lefties" his impulse and line of
thinking are abundantly clear in the original set of questions
submitted. If his action does not underscore the advent of what we must
now recognize and name as a Culture Cleansing, I do not know what more
evidence we need.
Now Gingrich is considering honoring his promise to Rev. Lou Sheldon of
the Traditional Values Coalition to hold hearings on whether public
schools promote homosexuality. Such a hearing would provide Sheldon
with a national platform to espouse his despicable bigotry and homphobia.
I am sure others know of other Cleansing efforts that have not yet come
to light.
Jeff Briggs is right. A forum is needed to address this onslaught. I
don't know where it is at this moment.
Whoops, I forgot to include the recent decision by the Smithsonian to
bow to the pressures of some veterans and members of Congress (same
crowd) to basically cancel the Enola Gay exhibit. this must be
recognized as the humantities equivalent of the Corcoran Gallery's cave
in 1989 when it cancelled the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibit; again, same
"crowd" was forcing this action.
The forum is absolutely necessary, Jeff. Perhaps we had better start
ourselves.
