Those folks on this list who are concerned about the future
of public broadcasting should take a moment and send email
to Al Gore and thank him for his remarks last week in support
of PBS.

The address is vice.president@whitehouse.gov

If you care about PBS, this is a great chance to show support.

Marc.

(From a Reuter's report of the Vice President's speech
at American University last week)

Vice President Al Gore lambasted "extremists" he said were trying to kill
off public broadcasting in the United States and said the Clinton
administration would fight to save it.

Gore said attempts to cut federal funding for public broadcasting were
part of a "mean-spirited" Republican assault on programs that enrich
children, like school lunches and the summer jobs program.

"Public broadcasting is a national treasure," Gore told an audience at
American University in Washington. "Public broadcasting is a part of
American culture ... and if you try to kill it, we will fight you every
step of the way."

(Story notes that 90 percent of the 70 million children in the United
States have regular exposure to at least one program on public
broadcasting that for many children, public broadcasting is the first
exposure they have to numbers and letter)

Gore charged that "privatizing" was really a code word for
commercializing public broadcasting, which he said was the opposite of
what most Americans want.

"A lot of Americans have had it up to here with commercial television"
and the violence and sex in its programming, Gore said. Commercial
television did not eliminate the need for federal funding for educational
programs, he added.
