So instead of easing regulations on telcos to "increase competition", 
why don't we make cables common carriers too, giving everyone a more 
level playing field?

I think it's obvious we have plenty of competition already, and the 
market system is functioning excellently.  Pressler et al are clearly 
opening the door not to more competition, but to increased monopoly 
concentration.
