Warming up the public through ambiguous leaks about expected White House
action on telecommunications reform, through a trusted member of the
public interest community, cannot resolve the Administration's pathetic
conduct in this domain. The White House and all relevant advisory
committees remain captive to industry dictatorship on this issue, so what
can the people expect? Action to bring the public fully into command of
the advisory councils; action to denounce and prohibit the "monster model"
of telecommunications; action to assure real competition that prohibits a
return to the Robber Baron era; and decisive action to secure an
infrastructure that will serve society and the environment without profit
pressures----that's what is needed. But we are unlikely to get that
action when all that is forthcoming is propaganda, doublespeak, and half
baked leaks.
