Subject: NLG: Hack or Reform?

The Committee on Democratic Communications (CDC) of the National
Lawyers Guild is wrestling with the question of how progressive
and radical lawyers can contribute to the fight to build a
democratic cyberspace universe.

We take as a model the growth of micro radio. Rather than wait
for court decisions or legislative reform, a hardy band of grass
roots community-based micro broadcasters went on the air without
asking anyone. Now the Federal Courts have started to recognize
that important constitutional rights are being exercised by these
activists. Can these same methods be effective in preserving and
democratizing cyberspace?

At the upcoming Lawyers Guild convention we want to have
spokespeople for a variety of approaches -- from lobbying
respectfully for legislative reform to self help methods such as
hacking - to ensure that cyberspace remains free and democratic.

We are interested in hearing from or about people with ideas on
how these approaches can be effective in ensuring a democratic
cyberspace.

Thanks!!
