I have been watching the debate over the Senate and House telecom
bills with mixed emotions - I see that many people are upset over
the cross-ownership, privacy, censorship, etc. etc. provisions. I
also have been involved in the effort to assure that provisions
regarding access to networks, hardware, and programming for disabled
people are incorporated. Such provisions were in last year's bills
and remain in various forms in this year's. The disabilities
communities are relatively satisfied with the provisions as written
and are hoping that the access provisions survive the floors and
conference committee.
So, before anyone suggests throwing the baby out with the bath water
(been using this cliche a lot lately), consider the benefits to these
underserved communities.
