Subject: intellectual property and interoperability meeting

At the TPR meeting earlier this month, a number of people asked to
receive information about the upcoming meeting of the American
Committee for Interoperable Systems (ACIS). Details follow.

Please note that anyone interested in attending the meeting must be
pre-registered with ACIS. There is no charge for the meeting or lunch,
however only those people already on the list the day of the meeting
will be allowed in, so you must RSVP if you want to attend. ACIS does
need to retain the right to turn down RSVPs if we run out of space, so
please response ASAP if you are interested in attending.

The meeting will be held in the John Hay room of the Hay Adams Hotel
at One Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, June 13, from
9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and will include lunch. As you know, the
Administration's White Paper on intellectual property issues related to
the National Information Infrastructure is scheduled to be released in
the coming weeks. Assuming it is released prior to our meeting, part
of the morning program will be dedicated to discussing the findings and
recommendations included in the paper. We will also discuss the
legislative agenda for intellectual property issues. The PTO is also
expected to release its new guidelines on software patents in the
coming weeks, and that will be another meeting topic. The agenda will
also include a presentation by Professor David Rice of Rutgers Law
School on the UCC-2 revision process, and an update on court cases that
have arisen or been decided in recent months. The luncheon
speaker is Gary Reback, partner at Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and
Rosati. Gary will discuss the Lotus v. Borland case, and the Microsoft
consent decree.

ACIS is a coalition of computer software and hardware companies that
was formed in 1991 to support policies and principles of intellectual
property law that provide a balance between rewards for innovation and
the belief that computer systems developed by different vendors must
be able to communicate with each other. ACIS members all believe in
protecting the innovative creations they and other vendors have to
offer. At the same time, ACIS members support interoperability which
will promote competition, access and consumer choice.
