Josh Shenk's piece on the current state of the corporate vision of 
the future I-Net is well written, informative, clear, well-researched, 
and balanced in tone. I like his clear statement of the problem (the 
telecomm industry has put$50 million into conressional coffers since 
1983, and therefore none of our preoccupations about many-to-many and 
democratic, educational, and cultural (multicultural) uses of the net 
are being even given lip service), but his reasonable assumption that 
if we are strong and unremitting in our efforts, we may be able to 
spare the essence of what we have now, and keep the capitalists from 
killing the best hope I have seen in my lifetime for freedom of 
communication and its concomitant possibility for bringing issues and 
solutions long ignored by the powers that control American life into 
the minds of millions.
