Since most of us most often think of Cable TV and DSS/DBS only in terms
of broadcast services, I'd like to remind readers of another important
distinction between CATV and the new DSS/DBS small dish satellite
services
-
DSS/DBS is strictly a one way broadcast service, and is likely to
remain that way for a very long time.
CATV, on the other hand, is capable of a full two-way digital data
stream in both directions (to/from the consumer). Many CATV systems are
able to do this now; many more can be and are upgraded/upgrading.
When it comes to regulation, public interest, common carriage, and
other issues surrounding CATV and DSS/DBS, this will be a VERY significant
difference in the near future as our world becomes more digital.
