Subject: FCC/NTIA AT ALLIANCE CONFERENCE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 2, 1995
FCC CABLE AND COMMON CARRIER CHIEFS, NTIA'S LARRY IRVING ADDRESS
COMMUNITY MEDIA CONFERENCE IN BOSTON ON JULY 5 - 8
The Alliance for Community Media will host Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) Common Carrier Bureau Chief Kathleen M. H. Wallman,
FCC Cables Services Bureau Chief Meredith Jones, and U.S. Department
of Commerce Assistant Secretary (and head of the National
Telecommunications and Information Administration) Larry Irving at
their annual conference. The nation's largest gathering of
practitioners and advocates for community access to the information
superhighway, the Alliance's 1995 International Conference and Trade
Show will be headquartered at the Westin Hotel at Copley Place in
Boston on July 5 - 8, 1995.
"The participation of top representatives of the FCC and the Department
of Commerce in our annual meeting highlights the impact the Alliance
has made over the past year," said Alliance Executive Director Barry
Forbes. "Our members have been successful in drawing attention to the
importance of providing for the public interest in the telecommunications
regulation -- and in the legislation now facing Congress. I'm delighted
that our members will have the opportunity to discuss their concerns
one-on-one with these key members of the Administration."
The Alliance's 1995 International Conference and Trade Show will focus
on "Community Media: Thriving in the Technology Revolution." The four-
day event will include in-depth seminars, workshops, networking
opportunities, a two-day trade show, a full-day intensive program on
"Access Management from A to Z," a hands-on media lab, open houses at
area community media facilities, special events at the Boston Computer
Museum and New England Aquarium, and the awards ceremony for the
nation's largest and oldest community television competition, the
Hometown Video Festival, at historic Fanueil Hall. Over sixty separate
seminars and workshops will explore issues in public policy, access
management, community media centers of the future, new technologies,
fundraising, community telecomputing, training, educational access,
media arts, government access, media literacy, and international uses
of community video.
"This will be most exciting event the Alliance has ever produced,"
said 1995 Conference Chair Rika Welsh, Executive Director of Malden
Access Television. "We'll draw heavily on the unique resources of
the Boston area -- the technology, educational institutions, media
arts groups, technical expertise, and all the wonderful community media
and computing organizations!" This year planners are anticipating over
1,000 community video producers, PEG (public, educational, and
government) access professionals, media and communications educators,
media literacy advocates, international producers, providers of media
services and equipment, cable operators, and community computing staff
members.
"The convergences of technology, public policy, and community
organizations has created a heightened awareness of community media
this past year," said Barry Forbes, Executive Director for the Alliance
for Community Media. "The lines between different types of media are
blurring as technology is producing video over phone lines, interactive
cable television, and sound and video over the internet. Federal, state
and local officials are right now grappling with these implications as
they try to re-invent telecommunications regulation. And the impact on
the community organizations which serve the public interest are
enormous. The 1995 Alliance Conference will be addressing these
critical issues -- and that's why we've received such an enormous
amount of interest in this year's event."
Registration rates are available for the full conference for $330 for
Alliance members and $430 for non-members. Single day registration is
available at $110 for members and $145 for non-members. The rates for
exhibitors in the two-day Trade Show are $625 for for-profit companies
and $425 for non-profit organizations. Full participation as an
Exhibitor in the Trade Show and in the rest of the Conference is $700
for for-profit companies and $500 for non-profit groups. Advertising
in the Conference program book Syllabus is available from $150 for a
business card space to $500 for a full page.
