I found it interesting that Dole specifically remarked on "Natural
Born Killers" -- a film which takes as its theme the role of the
media in transforming criinals into stars, and in making heros of
senseless killer. The film clearly holds the media responsible
for glorifying violence and those who perform unsocial acts. This
points to the danger of censorship, for in the process of "protecting"
citizens from violent and sexual works we would lose not only those
with little (if any) artistic content, but also those with brilliant
social commentary. Now I realize that Dole and other probably think
that any violence or sex in any media is socially unacceptable, and
that artistic merit is not an issue. In that case I refer them to
the Bible, Shakespeare, Euripides, Aristophanes, Fielding. . . .not
to mention the Ramayanana and Grimm's Fairy Tales.
I'm not suggesting there are easy solutions - but certainly not
funding any art because some art may be offensive to some seems like
(pardon the expression) overkill.
