As I mentioned at the end of the last TPR Meeting, I'm volunteering
with the Washington Area Project for Youth to teach at-risk D.C. youth
Internet skills. The program is being implemented now and will begin
working with kids this Fall. Please repost this message if possible.
Your support is greatly appreciated!

For Washington, D.C. individuals or companies interested in bringing the
Internet to kids in urban Washington, D.C.:
*****
The Washington Area Project for Youth (WAPY) is expanding the scope of its
Youth at Risk program (YAR), an aggressive intervention program targeting
at-risk youth ages 15-21 in the metropolitan DC community to include
education in computer skills and Internet access.
Called the "Ward 8 Youth Resource Access and Entrepeneurial Center", this
new program will link seven Ward 8 public housing sites with WAPY's
downtown office. On-line research, World Wide Web page design, desktop
publishing and database management skills will be taught to youth in the
program.
So what does this have to do with you? WAPY is looking for volunteers to
participate in training youth in these skills. Participants should have
basic Internet user experience and the desire to make a difference in
someone's life. WAPY is also looking for donations of old and/or unused
computers or software. By taking donating computers and trading them in
for newer equipment, the program is moving quickly in setting up a wide
area, Internet-connected network for the centers.
WAPY has already received a matching fund commitment of $40,000 from LISC,
staff commitments of over $90,000, seven 386 model computers and forty-two
286 computers from the law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton.
Your older equipment like this can be donated, WAPY will take care of
trading this in for new, multimedia and Internet-capable equipment. All
donations are tax-deductible, and will be attributed with your
corporation's name and logo on the program's home page.
If you are interested in participating as a volunteer, or would be
interested in becoming a corporate partner through equipment donations,
technical or training support, please contact:

Set-up and implementation of computer equipment and networks has already
begun; training of youth in the centers is slated to begin this fall.
Make a difference in these kids' lives by donating your time, experience
or equipment today! We're looking forward to your participation ....
