Howdy everybody out there in this wonderful Democracy of ours!
The timber industry has created an 800 number that goes to any Senator.
Dial 1-800-444-1555
-you'll get a computer asking you to tell your senator to vote for some bill
that will compromise away everything [Ed: hit "1" to skip this spiel]
-then the computer will ask you to punch in your zip code
-then the computer will ask you which of your 2 senators you'd like to speak
with
-then it puts you through directly to the senators DC office
-and you get to take part in our democratic system on the timber industry's
dime. Isn't that swell!
Say whatever you want to- but here's a timber-related suggestion:
Tell your Senator to stop the "timber salvage rider" which will allow cutting
in ALL roadless areas on forest service and BLM land. That means ALL old
growth forests on these lands are threatened. It will suspend all
environmental laws on forest service land.
[Ed: when I called, they needed more info. The Timber salvage rider is Sec.
2001 attached to S617, the Rescissions Bill. To look at more of S617, see:
http://thomas.loc.gov/home/c104query.html and search on "rescissions". It's
pretty ugly, IMHO]
Something else you can do:
Two weeks ago, Clinton bravely vetoed the timber salvage rider, this
week, he's letting it go through. Surprised?! Tell him, "no veto, no vote".
