SENATE VOTES TO KILL OTA
Amendment To Save OTA Fails
Washington, DC--The US Senate this evening agreed by a vote of 54
to 45 to table an amendment (No. 1808) to the Legislative Branch
Appropriations for FY 1996, offered by Sen. Hollings, which would
have provided funds to retain the viability of the Office of
Technology Assessment. The amendment would have established an
Office of Congressional Services into which there would have been
consolidated the OTA together with other legislative branch support
agencies, including the General Accounting Office and the Government
Printing Office, under the control of the Library of Congress. The
vote leaves standing the bill [HR 1854] reported to the Senate
Tuesday that would terminate the OTA, while sustaining funding for
the GPO and Depository Library Program that the House bill would
have severely reduced.
