House to vote on bill
The House Commerce Committee took a procedural step to ensure that the
full House will have time to vote on a controversial telecommunications
overhaul measure before its scheduled Aug. 4 recess. After weeks
of closed-door negotiations involving competing telephone industries,
Commerce Committee leaders say that they have a deal that changes the
version that panel approved in May. The bill aims to overhaul the
nation's 61-year-old communications laws, allowing localphone,
long-distance phone and cable companies to compete in each other's
markets. It would also ease many ownership restrictions for broadcast
and other media properties. The changes they made, committee sources
said, will help regional Baby Bell companies compete more quickly with
long-distance companies. So sensitive is the issue that the committee
has yet to put it in writing. (Bloomberg)

yesterday on the bill and USA Today reported yesterday that
the long distance carriers were launching an advertising blitz
to kill the bill in the article " ADS/ UNPLUG THE TELECOM OVERHAUL BILL"
