Will the Digital Age Be Democratic?
Work for a Public Interest Vision
of the "Information Superhighway"
W I T H C M E ' S F U T U R E O F M E D I A P R O J E C T
New technologies and changing government policies are transforming
the nation's telecommunications and media system rapidly. Yet key
questions need to be answered: Who will be able to access, send
and receive information on this web of computerized networks?
Will these technologies be available to all, or will it create a
society made up of the "information rich" and the "information
poor"? Will the "500-channel" world of interactive television
allow individuals, communities, and nonprofits to produce and
distribute their own multimedia programming, or will the system be
little more than home shopping malls and endless reruns?
The Center for Media Education (CME) is working to ensure that the
public interest is protected as this new "information
superhighway" develops. CME is a nonprofit, public interest,
education and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting the
democratic use of electronic media. We are seeking interns for
our FUTURE OF MEDIA project.
Interns will perform a variety of duties including -- but not limited
to -- the following:
1. Perform independent research.
Work individually and with consultants on several research
projects of varying size. Projects may include examining the
impact of new technologies for nonprofit organizations, or
compiling a list of experts and sources on a specific issue
for reporters.
2. Track telecommunications developments.
Scan newspapers and industry trade publications for articles
involving new technologies and actions of media companies.
Clip, analyze for the CME staff. Attend Congressional and FCC
hearings. Examine online information sources. Maintain
library of legislation, FCC documents, and Administration
proposals.
3.. Assist CME staff with ongoing projects.
Assist in outreach to nonprofits, including the production of
_InfoActive: The Telecommunications Monthly for Nonprofits._
Help with ongoing research projects.
Requirements
We are looking for bright, energetic, capable and hard-working
individuals to serve as interns this semester. Graduate and
undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. Tasks will be
scaled according to experience and knowledge. The ideal interns
would:
* be interested in the politics of media and communications
policy,
* possess strong research and writing skills,
* be self-motivated and able to work independently in a
fast-paced environment,
* be familiar with technical issues and related legislation,
* be able to absorb and analyze late breaking developments,
* have strong computer skills (familiarity with Macintosh Word,
as well as telecommunications and desktop publishing software),
* have a desire to work for change in the public interest.
To Apply
CME has full-time and part-time internships available. The
internship runs 10-12 weeks, and the start and end dates are flexible.
Full-time interns will be expected to work 40 hours a week; part-time
interns will be expected to be available for at least 15 hours a
week. We will work with you so that you may earn college credit
for your internship experience. Send cover letter, resume, and a
brief writing sample to:
