**Sen. Patrick Leahy to Speak on Internet Issues at FARNET Conference**

Washington, DC. --- Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) will speak at the FARNET,
(the Federation of American Research Networks), member meeting on September
7, 1995 on legislative issues affecting the future of the Internet. Sen.
Leahy has been active in issues concerning the Internet on Capitol Hill -
particularly through his role on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Leahy is
also an active user of the Internet. He has conducted electronic town
meetings and has his own web page.

"We are very excited to have Senator Leahy address our members..." said
Jim Williams, Executive Director of FARNET. "He is taking a leadership
role in helping to shape the future of Internetworking both in his work
in the Senate and through his use of the Internet to communicate to his
constituents"

The FARNET meeting on September 7 and 8 will include executives from
academia, government, industry and the public-interest sector. The theme
of the meeting, "Alliances for Success" focuses on forming cross-sector
alliances to take the national networking initiative that FARNET members
have been involved in to the next level.

Senator Leahy's speech on the morning of Sept. 7 will be carried live via
the CU-See Me Internet video conferencing application. Developed by FARNET
member Cornell University, the software application allows people around
the country, including a number of K-12 school children, to watch real
time video over the Internet.

The mission of FARNET is national advocacy for Internetworking with a
primary focus on the education, research, and related communities. FARNET
is an executive forum for the exchange of information about the Internet
and its applications and services, and acts as a catalyst for the transfer
of leading edge information infrastructure technology. Based in DC.,
FARNET was founded in 1986 by the leaders of state and regional computer
networks. Its membership has grown to include organizations representing
nationwide Internet providers, regional networks, equipment providers and
telecommunications firms.
