Subject: Campaign for Broadcast Competition Update
Dear Colleague,
Even without a formal unveiling (the press conference scheduled for
Sept. 6th has been postponed), the campaign is in full swing.
Karen Kerrigan, founder of the Campaign for Broadcast Competition
(CBC), will appear on National Empowerment Television with Paul
Weyrich this evening to discuss CBC and to urge viewers to call
or write their congressman and senators to express their oppostion
to this egregious form of corporate welfare.
The Senate Commerce Committee has scheduled on hearing on Sept. 12th
on auctioning the digital spectrum. Both Karen and I have been
contacted about our availability, so one of us or perhaps both may
testify. The hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Room 253 of the
Russell Senate Office Building.
The House Telecom Subsubcommittee in holding a hearing on spectrum
reform on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. in 2123 Rayburn HOB. While
not directly focusing on the broadcast giveaway, the issue is
likely to be raised by at least one of the witnesses.
So, in less than a month CBC has been successful in putting this
issue at the top of the legislative agenda despite the National
Association of Broadcasters' specious and hysterical efforts to
smear the campaign as a tool of--pick one--the cellular, cable,
RBOCs, long distance--you name it--industries.
Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions. I would
also welcome input for my testimony, as well as for an article
on the issue to be published in the October issue of "The Ripon
Forum." My deadline is Sept. 11th, so if you have any comments,
I need to hear from you no later than Sunday, Sept. 10th.
Thanks much and keep those calls coming to the House and Senate
Commerce Committees.
