SEN. LEAHY SHARES EXPERIENCES ON INTERNET AT RECENT FARNET MEETING

Washington, DC --- Senator Patrick J. Leahy (D-VT) spoke on Thursday
morning, Sept. 7, at the Federation of American Research Networks (FARNET)
Member Meeting in Washington, DC. The speech was carried live via CU-See
Me - a video conferencing application developed by Cornell University.
Sen. Leahy's speech was carried to the Internet community via AGIS, a
network service provider. Both Cornell and AGIS are members of FARNET.

Sen. Leahy has been active both personally and as a member of Congress in
issues affecting the Internet community. Leahy recalled his experience
holding an on-line "town meeting" with constituents and expressed his
belief in the positive impact internetworking can have on rural
communities.

Leahy also took the opportunity to talk about new legislative proposals he
has sponsored (in addition to S. 714 - the "Leahy Amendment" to the Senate
telecom bill), including S. 1090, The Electronic Freedom of Information Act
of 1995 and S. 1122 the Criminal Copyright Improvement Act.

Leahy was followed by four panels of speakers from the government, research
and education, community and business perspectives. The meeting,
"Alliances for Success" was successful in bringing together various
communities to discuss their needs and perspectives on the future of
internetworking for the research and education community.

The mission of FARNET is national advocacy for Internetworking with a
primary focus on the education, research, and related communities. FARNET
is an executive forum for the exchange of information about the Internet
and its applications and services, and acts as a catalyst for the transfer
of leading edge information infrastructure technology. Based in DC.,
FARNET was founded in 1986 by the leaders of state and regional computer
networks. Its membership has grown to include organizations representing
nationwide Internet providers, regional networks, equipment providers and
telecommunications firms.
