Subject: TIIAP Funding Survives Senate Vote

Just about an hour ago, the Senate voted to appropriate about 19 million
in FY '96 funding for the Telecommunications Information Infrastructure
Assistance Program, in support of an amendment proposed by Senators Kerry
(D-NE), Snowe (R-ME) and Leahy (D-VT). Both Kerry and Snowe apparently
spoke at length about the program's benefits. We'll report more as we
learn it. The amendment was retained on a voice vote of 64-33, a
comfortable margin demonstrating substantial bi-partisan support for the
popular information highway grant program.
