FAQ's About Free Speech TV and its Web Site

What's Free Speech TV?

Free Speech TV (FStv) is the largest progressive television network in the
United States. It currently delivers programs---mostly documentaries and
magazine shows---to 44 cable systems serving about 4.2 million subscribers.

And what about FStv's web site?

FStv recently launched a web site (http://www.freespeech.org). Currently,
this site promotes FStv's television activities, and is promoted over the
air by FStv. FStv recently obtained funding to dramatically expand the
web site, and to add original content in audio, video, and text. Because
of our television network, FStv has access to a regular supply of
interesting audio and video material. We realize the challenge of
distributing video over the Internet, given bandwidth limitations.
However, we anticipate that these limitations will ease with time, and,
as a television organization, we feel that we need to be in the vanguard
of internet video distribution.

We anticipate posting new information daily on the web site, and archiving
as much as feasible, given that video files are large and storage will be
finite.

How large do you anticipate the web project to grow?

In the immediate future, we plan to hire two full-time employees: a
webmaster, who will be principally in charge of technical matters, and
a web editor, who will be principally in charge of content. These staff
people will utilize material derived from FStv television programming as
one major source of content for the web site, although we plan for
original content as well.

It is more difficult to predict the growth of the site over the longer
term. However, we are exploring joint ventures which would greatly
expand the amount of information---especially timely information---
available at the site, as well as the number of content contributors.

What sort of hardware will be entailed in operating the site?

We are still researching this question, and, if possible, will make our
final decisions in consultation with the webmaster. However, our tentative
conclusion is that we will require our own server located near the internet
backbone, due to the high bandwidth requirements of video file transfers.
We also plan to purchase a substantial amount of hardware for digitizing
andd manipulating audio, video, and still images.

Where will these jobs be located and when will the positions be filled?

FStv is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado. We anticipate operating the
web activities from Boulder. We hope to fill these positions no later
than January, 1996.
