Subject: Alliance Elects Bushong as Chair
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 30, 1995
OREGON ACTIVIST AND PUBLIC ACCESS MANAGER
ELECTED TO LEAD COMMUNITY MEDIA ADVOCATES
At its October meeting in Portland, Oregon, the Board of Directors of the
Alliance for Community Media elected Alan Bushong to the position of Chair.
Bushong is Executive Director of Capital Community Television in Salem,
Oregon.
As Alliance Public Policy Chair, Bushong guided a successful campaign in 1994
to gain language in federal legislation requiring telephone companies to
provide public, educational and governmental (PEG) access channels and
funding comparable to those required of cable operators. Bushong started in
community media in 1979 with Austin (Texas) Community Television. In 1989, he
moved to Salem, Oregon, to start up a new PEG access center in a state
capital without a local broadcast television station.
"I'm a public interest activist," said Bushong, "although through no plan or
design. I grew up in Darlington, Indiana, a farm town of 680 in an area never
considered activist. However, the social movements of the past thirty years
and the birth of my daughter have changed me. As a parent, I've become
increasingly aware of inequities and unfairness that require our action, and
of the important role community media can play."
"The Alliance has an exciting year ahead," said Barry Forbes, Executive
Director of the Alliance. "We'll be stepping up our public policy efforts,
launching public awareness and coalition-building activities, and redesigning
the nature of the organization itself. Alan will be a tremendous asset by
bringing his long-term perspective, political skill, and sensitivity to the
needs of the members to his role as Chair. I am truly looking forward to
working with him in his new role."
The other officers elected by the Board include Ann Flynn, Executive Director
of the Tampa Educational Cable Consortium, as Vice Chair; Greg Vawter,
Executive Director of Waycross Community Television (Forest Park, OH) as
Secretary; Velvalee (Vel) Wiley, Executive Director of the Milwaukee Access
Telecommunications Authority, as Treasurer; and Brian Wilson, Access Director
of Somerville (MA) Cable Access Television as Chair of Regional Chairs.
The Alliance for Community Media is a national, non-profit membership
organization committed to assuring everyone's access to electronic media. The
Alliance accomplishes this by disseminating public information, advancing a
positive legislative and regulatory environment, and supporting local
organizing. Founded in 1976, the Alliance represents the interests of an
estimated one million community, religious and charitable groups and
individuals who use public, educational, and government (PEG) access channels
and facilities to speak to their communities. The Alliance also serves the
interests of over 950 public, educational and governmental ("PEG") access
organizations and local origination cable services throughout the country.
