FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HOMETOWN VIDEO FESTIVAL NOW ACCEPTING COMMUNITY MEDIA PROGRAMMING ENTRIES
Greater National Recognition for Media Professionals and Nonprofessionals
Washington DC -- The largest and oldest community media competition and
festival in the United States will be accepting video programming entries
until March 1, 1996. The 1996 Hometown Video Festival will be the 19th
annual celebration of community media programming produced by the Alliance
for Community Media and is expected to attract 2,000 entries in 33
categories, plus four "Overall Excellence" categories that honor
outstanding public, educational, and government (PEG) access facilities
and local origination centers of cable systems.
Entries by media professionals will be primarily judged separately from
those produced by non-professionals. The programs will be judged on how
well they address community concerns, in addition to technical
quality and execution, by the staff and volunters of over 30 access
facilities and cable companies across the country.
"We honor folks who are not necessarily media professionals, but who use
use the powerful tool of video to communicate with their communities,"
said 1996 Hometown Video Festival Chair Deborah Vinsel, Executive
Director of Thurston Community Television in Olympia, Washington.
"What's unique about the Hometown Festival is that the effective
presentation of a message is weighted more heavily than technical
execution."
"Last year, we received a total of 1,751 entries from 392 cities in
38 states and four Canadian provinces," said Barry Forbes, Executive
Director of the Alliance. "But with the surge of interest in local
community media, I expect that we'll top 2,000 this year!"
"We're also planning to provide more national recognition for producers
this year," continued Forbes. "Not only will we print a complete listing
of winners in our bi-monthly journal Community Media Review, but we'll
also send all of our organizational members a directory with the winners'
contact information -- and we'll publish a catalog of the contact
information for everyone who enters the festival!"
Winners will be announced and awards presented on July 18, 1996, in the
Washington DC area at the 1996 Hometown Video Festival Awards Ceremony,
which will be held in conjunction with the Alliance's 1996 International
Conference and Trade Show. Entry fees for Alliance members are $36 for
Media Professionals and $21 for Nonprofessionals. Entry fees for non-
members are $56 for Media Professionals and $46 for Nonprofessionals.
1996 Hometown Video Festival entry forms are available from all Alliance
member organizations or from the Alliance National Office at
(202) 393-2650. Videocassettes of the 1995 Awards Ceremony and a three-
hour sampler of the 1995 entries may by purchased from the Alliance.
The Alliance for Community Media is a national, non-profit membership
organization committed to assuring everyone's access to electronic media.
The Alliance accomplishes this by disseminating public information,
advancing a positive legislative and regulatory environment, and
supporting local organizing. Founded in 1976, the Alliance represents
the interests of an estimated one million community, religious and
charitable groups and individuals who use public, educational, and
government (PEG) access channels and facilities to speak to their
communities. The Alliance also serves the interests of over 950 public,
educational and governmental ("PEG") access organizations and local
origination cable services throughout the country.
