This session will feature two related archival identity management projects: Social Networks and Archival Context (SNAC) and Building a National Archival Authorities Infrastructure. SNAC (2010-2014), a project to create a test bed of archival authority records and demonstrate their potential for user discovery, comprises a three-part process. First, personal, corporate, and family names (and related historical data) are extracted from finding aids (descriptions of archival records). Next, these names and data are assembled into contextual authority records, which are compared against each other, and against authority and historical data from other sources (e.g. VIAF and DBpedia). The resulting set of authority records serves as the basis of a prototype interface that provides integrated access (through the names and descriptions of people) to related but distributed primary and secondary resources. By virtue of the connections displayed between authority records and related sources, the prototype also provides a visualization of the historical social networks in which the people depicted lived and worked.

Among the primary objectives of the Building a National Archival Authorities Infrastructure (2011-2013) project is to transform the groundwork completed by SNAC into a sustainable national archival authorities cooperative program that is similar to, but distinct from, the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO). The project has convened a series of meetings comprising archivists, librarians, scholars, and allied professionals, with the goal of developing a blueprint for the cooperative. The emerging consensus from these meetings is that the National Archives and Records Administration will host the cooperative, collaborating with the archival and allied communities in its governance, development, and maintenance.

The name ambiguity problem in attribution of scholarship is one that can only be solved collaboratively, when all stakeholders agree on a standard identification scheme. The ORCID initiative was launched in 2010 to address this problem by bringing together universities, publishers, funding bodies, and other organizations in the scholarly communications space to create a global, open registry of unique, persistent identifiers for individual researchers, and a transparent linking mechanism between ORCID and other author identifier schemes. ORCIDs linked to publications and other artifacts of scholarship promise to enhance the research discovery process, streamline management of grants and researcher profile data, and simplify mechanisms for output and impact tracking. This project briefing will cover recent ORCID developments, including the Phase 1 system launch scheduled for early 2012, the National Science Foundation EAGER award to fund research at the University of Chicago and Harvard University to examine ORCID’s role in advancing the science of science policy, and ORCID’s planned membership and sustainability models.

[31 min.]

Nov. 28, 2011

Updates on issues ranging from open data to innovations in publishing to assessment were topics covered in the latest report from CNI. Clifford Lynch discusses the U.S. Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) Calls for Comment on open data (http://federalregister.gov/a/2011-28621) and open publications (http://federalregister.gov/a/2011-28623), notes a European Knowledge Exchange paper on an action program for research data (http://www.cni.org/news/4-nation-action-program-for-research-data-a/), and describes issues related to new forms of publication and author identity discussed at the Innovation in Science Publishing conference. At the McCusker lecture at Dominican University, Lynch addressed the relationship between bibliography and biography.

Joan Lippincott summarized the recent Berlin 9 meeting (http://www.berlin9.org/), an international conference held for the first time in the US, focusing on all aspects of open access. She also provided some comments on the current emphasis on assessment in higher education and previewed a project briefing on that topic at the December CNI membership meeting. She will be joined in that session by Malcolm Brown of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) and Jeanne Narum of the Learning Spaces Collaboratory (LSC).

Cliff wrapped up by highlighting some upcoming meetings, including the upcoming CENDI meeting on repositories, which will focus on emerging developments in federal agency repositories, the International Digital Curation Conference (IDDC, http://www.dcc.ac.uk/events/idcc11) for which CNI is a co-sponsor, and a talk he will give at the National Library of Medicine/NIH on December 16. He reminded listeners about the CNI meeting on December 12-13 in Arlington, VA (http://www.cni.org/mm/fall-2011/).
