Mission Statement
The Research Libraries Group, Inc., is a partnership of not-for-
profit research institutions working in concert to advance education and
scholarship, for the benefit of the research community at large as well
as the constituencies of member institutions. The mission of RLG is to
identify and solve such problems of information creation, collection,
and access as its members judge are amenable to cooperative solutions
and that are beyond their individual capacities. The goal is to make
the universe of recorded knowledge widely available in a timely and
cost-effective manner. This mission will be accomplished through
shared responsibility and interdependence among the participating
institutions.
In pursuit of its mission, the corporation:
- Exercises leadership in the national and international
research information community.
- Initiates and operates cooperative programs to maintain and
enhance access to information resources and recorded knowledge in all
media.
- Identifies, develops, and adapts technology to improve
information management and sharing.
- Defines standards for information services and works with
other organizations to establish compatibility among networking
systems.
- Employs an operating staff whose responsibilities range from
providing services to anticipating and planning for future directions in
librarianship and information management.
