Re: Meeting on open architecture and common carriage
At the last meeting of the Telecommunications Policy Roundtable
there was considerable interest in circulating a letter to the
membership of the Roundtable supporting open architecture and
open access to telecommunications network services. Jerry Berman
of EFF wants to obtain support for his organization's open
platform proposal. Several members of the roundtable have asked
that the various House and Senate Telcom/Cable bills require
common carriage for both cable and telephone video services, and
there is considerable interest in the proposal by Sun
Microsystems that the legislation require open architecture for
the so called "set top" controller which will manipulate the new
broadband services.
A meeting was scheduled at the Center for Study of Responsive Law
for Tuesday, February 15, from noon to 2 pm, to discuss the
contents of a letter that would offer strong public interest
support for these concepts. The address of the meeting is 1530
P. Street, NW. For more information, contact Jamie Love
(202/387-8030 or 610-658-0880) or Jerry Berman (202/347-5400).
