University of Michigan Research Environment


A. Introduction

A newly organized initiative to provide a similar information environment for faculty and students in the role of researchers.


B. Problem Statement

To enhance "discipline common" technological research components.


C. Objectives: Desired Outcomes

  • System integration with web for "easy" access and security, both authentication and authorization
  • Interoperability with appropriate and desired aspects of research, administrative, and instructional systems
  • Desktop customization of system component choices


D. Strategies

  • Outlining a plan for 97-98 activities
  • Reviewing direction and obtaining input from various members of the research community.
  • Identifying researcher or research committee sponsors


E. Components

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS): add remote and network access
  • Site license database
  • Data set sharing: enhance infrastructure
  • Local publishing: evolving and will include dissertation publication
