Abstract
The AT&T Teaching Theater has just completed its second full year of
operation as a unique classroom, a Campus resource used by faculty from
a broad spectrum of academic departments. It features a network of
computers highly integrated with a broad array of audio/visual
equipment in an effective setting. It is the first step in extending
to the lecture environment the benefits of technology that are
revolutionizing other aspects of the teaching/learning process.
Success is maximized by intensive one-on-one and group support of
faculty and extensive technical support.
In this room, faculty are encouraged to think far beyond networked
computers as training aids. Here, for example, technology is used to
enhance the teaching process by providing additional modes of
communication--some of them anonymous; tools to access class
understanding; on-line classroom organization using hypertext to link
the syllabus with lecture notes, outside readings, etc.; a student
information file with photographs and biographical sketch; and idea
capturing, expanding, and refining tools.
The success of the AT&T Teaching Theater concept has spawned the
planning and construction of several similar classrooms on Campus.
