Librarian Leaders in New Learning Communities
The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and the Coalition
for Networked Information (CNI) will present a preconference, "Librarian
Leaders in New Learning Communities," on Friday, July 5 from 8:30 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. at the Hotel Intercontinental, 111 E. 48th Street, New York
City in advance of the American Library Association Annual Conference.
Other supporters of the program are the American Association for Higher
Education (AAHE), Educom and the U.S. Department of Education under its
Title IIB Program.
The program will focus on preparing academic librarians to take leadership
roles on campus by participating in collaborative teams to create New Learning
Communities employing the technology of the Internet. The preconference will
focus on the process of forming successful New Learning Communities through
partnerships of faculty, librarians, information technologists and others.
Tom Kirk, College Librarian, Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana,
will be the lead facilitator. The agenda includes: a keynote address on
the principles of collaboration and collaborative learning; models of
successful programs; group discussion on the librarian's role as a leader
in learning communities; key characteristics of learning communities; a
panel of team members discussing successes and problems of program
implementation; and development of a strategic plan for participants'
back home institutions.
Fees are: $135 for ACRL members; $170 for ALA members; $230 for non-ALA
members.
