Staff BBS Tutorial

Description:

By sending mail to the address <inetroom@cni.org> we can post e-mail notes into a file which is readable using either the ELM or the PINE mail system.

Usage:

Since other INETROOM staffers will presumably be signing on to this system in order to use the other diagnostic tools, this may provide a convenient way to exchange information about problems staffers have encountered while working in the room. Also, we can post solutions to problems in this area as well.

There is no reason that the <inetroom@cni.org> account can't be made accessible to all the users of the ALA Internet Room as well. Access to the login could be made available from the ALA Internet Room Gopher using this type of .Link file:

     Type=8

Name=ALA Internet Room Diagnostic Tools

Path=inetroom

Host=a.cni.org

Port=

Syntax:

The inetroom@cni.org account is using the ELM filter utility to write all mail into a common log. The user is given the choice of reading this log with either the ELM or the PINE mail user agents (MUA).

     /usr/local/bin/elm -f <filename>

/usr/local/bin/pine -f <filename>

Operation on the INETROOM account:

If you select '8' from the main menu, you will be prompted with:

     Use elm or pine to read BBS?

Choose either ELM or PINE:

---> elm

Possible errors:

don't erase the e-mail

If you erase mail from the log, other ALA Internet Room staffers will be unable to read it. For this reason, you are working with a copy of the master BBS mail file. The next time you login, you will find all messages you have deleted still there.
