1996 CAUSE/CNI Southeast Regional Conference

Teaching and Learning in Cyberspace

A conference sponsored by CAUSE and the Coalition for Networked Information Hosted by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

September 12-13; Roanoke, Virginia

Conferees will meet at the historic, technologically-sophisticated Hotel Roanoke to explore the advantages and opportunities that technology offers to improve the instructional environment.

Twelve concurrent sessions and five general sessions will focus on:

  • networking infrastructure support for higher education
  • transformation of the teaching and learning environment
  • institutional policies for cyberspace
  • scholarly communication and publication in the networked environment
  • administrative applications on the network
  • the economics of technology in higher education
  • the challenges of distance education

General sessions

    "The Virtual Classroom: Silicon and Fiber Replacing Bricks and Mortar" Burks Oakley II, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Associate Director, Sloan Center for Asynchronous Learning Environments

    "The Role of Information Technology for a Learning Environment" Robert C. Bates, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, Virginia Tech

    "Financing Information Technology" William Graves, Associate Provost for Information Technology University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill

    "The Crisis in IT Support: Has Our Current Model Reached Its Limits?" Polley Ann McClure, Vice President/CIO, Professor of Environmental Science University of Virginia

    "Campus Networking Strategies for the Year 2000" Douglas Gale, Assistant Vice President, Information Systems & Services George Washington University

In addition, two pre-conference seminars will be offered on September 11:

  1. Full-day seminar for institutional teams
    "Working Together: A Seminar for Library and Information Technology Professionals" Gerry Bernbom, Assistant Director & Sr. Information Technology Architect, University Computing Services, Indiana University Kathryn Deiss, Program Officer for Training Association of Research Libraries

  2. Half-day seminar at the New Media Center, Virginia Tech

    Conference fees

      CAUSE/CNI members $100; non-members $200
      (after August 12, add $20)

    Pre-conference seminar fees
