BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The development and implementation of an institution-wide information strategy requires the participation of an informed constituency who can participate in the creation of the strategies and support its implementation. Continued participation requires a close association with the Information Technology staff for ongoing coordination and technical support. UC Davis supports the concept of an institution-wide information strategy through the many programs offered in our Technology Support Program (TSP) to which more than 200 departmental technical experts belong. The TSP provides the technical training and support that rewardsparticipation in the design of, and decision-making that conforms with, our information strategy. A key component of the TSP is training in the development of a departmental technology plan in close collaboration with Information Technology staff that integrates departmental systems with institutional hardware and software infrastructures and conforms with institutional policies and practices. Planned next steps are to expand the program to reach as many departments as possible and to begin to coalesce technology plans to align with the stated strategic directions.

Goals for participating in this initiative are:

to contribute our experiences and current understanding of institution-wide information strategies to a knowledge base that supports local strategic planning in the short term and potentially inter-institutional planning in the long term;

to improve our existing programs through the feedback of participants in the initiative;

to expand our institution-widestrategy through the incorporation of financial plans and information policies that are shared as part of this process;

to identify key issues which we have not yet faced but will need attention as we move forward in the development of our strategy.
