The rise of the web over the last 10 years has brought great changes to the economics and norms of journal publishing. But we have only just begun to scratch the surface -- the eventual effects of these technologies will profoundly alter scholarly discourse itself. This talk will describe ongoing work that is attempting to redefine scholarly communication for a networked world, and speculate on what the future might hold for publishers, librarians, and scholars themselves.
Timo Hannay is Publishing Director, Nature.com at the Nature Publishing Group, publishers of Nature and over seventy other scientific journals, plus numerous online resources for scientists and those interested in science. One of his areas of responsibility is new online initiatives in social software, databases and audio-visual content. Timo trained as a neurophysiologist at the University of Oxford and worked as a journalist (The Economist, Nature Medicine) and a management consultant (McKinsey & Co.) before becoming a publisher.
