Since 2022, the Montana State University (MSU) Library has been (somewhat) quietly and effectively leading campus efforts regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and its many considerations, concerns, and capabilities. When the Montana Commissioner of Higher Education came around to expecting AI leadership from its member campuses in 2025, MSU was well-poised to lead these efforts, in large part because of the groundwork the Library had done without expectations or guidance—all was based on its own initiative. This lightning talk will demonstrate how libraries can be leaders by anticipating needs and being ready to meet them. Libraries can be prepared to show effort and expertise when the right moment presents itself for the ultimate success of the library, its parent institution, and those they serve.
