Recent developments in the cultural heritage space have sparked conversations around understanding and evaluating economic models related to open digital infrastructure and services compared with commercial infrastructure and services. What are the roles of fiscal sponsors, governance, and associated communities in evaluating nonprofit organizations? Where is opaque acceptable in both open and commercial operations? With consultation from the Entrepreneurship Institute and Strategic Programs at Colorado State University, this presentation will provide an overview of different business models in nonprofit and commercial sectors and discuss criteria for evaluating these services. How sustainability is measured within business ventures, criteria for when risk may be worth it, and when to back out of projects/services will also be addressed.
