Many companies use project and program management to execute and deliver new products and services. Successful companies use project portfolio management to align innovation to strategy, connect goals with resources, and build organizational agility. To ensure the successful completion of a major renovation of two mid-century modern buildings and revitalize its services for students and faculty, the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) Library looked outside of the library community for inspiration. With initial support from Georgia Tech Strategic Consulting, the Library became one of the early adopters of portfolio management on campus in 2016. Now after completing more than 75 projects, the Library’s professional portfolio manager works with Library program and project managers to select, prioritize, and coordinate nine program areas and more than 20 current projects. This briefing summarizes the growth and development of the Library’s portfolio management process, reviews challenges and opportunities, and highlights the value of adopting this approach for achieving the transformation of Library spaces, content, and services.
