I am passing along the call for proposals for the 21st International Digital Curation Conference—IDCC27 will take place February 9-12, 2027, in Lisbon, Portugal.

CNI will once again act as a collaborating organization for this important event; see below for details from the Digital Curation Center.

-Paige Pope, CNI

—————————

We are delighted to announce that the call for submissions for the 21st International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC27) is now open! The conference will take place in Lisbon, Portugal between 9-12 February 2027.

Conference Theme
The main theme of the conference is, FAIR DO’s: Centering People in the Stewardship and Curation of Digital Objects.

The FAIR principles emphasize machine actionability, but the increasing integration of artificial intelligence systems into data infrastructure carries the risk of marginalizing people in the planning, management, and practice of digital curation.

The theme of this year’s conference acknowledges the crucial role of people in the work of making digital objects FAIR. This includes the labour involved, how it is recognized, supported, and the values that guide this work. You can get more information about the theme on our Conference Theme page.

Call for Submissions open!
Submissions are open for papers, lightning talks, posters, demos, and workshops:

– Papers – are for research or practice work which is suitably advanced, has substantial results, and reflections that would inform the work of the digital curation community.
– Lightning Talks – give an opportunity to showcase work in progress or completed projects that you believe offers insights or practical lessons that advance digital curation research or practice.
– Posters – offer a great opportunity to showcase and promote your work to the community through images rather than just words, as well as interact with others, gather feedback and exchange ideas.
– Demos (new for IDCC27) – showcase an application to the digital curation community.
– Workshops – have focused on practical, hands-on work, often being used for training.

Learn more about the Call for Submissions on our website.

If you have any questions about IDCC, please contact idcc@ed.ac.uk.

Anna Sackmann
Data Services Librarian
University of California, Berkeley

The University of California, Berkeley historically lagged behind peer institutions in research data storage, offering 200 GB per faculty member while peers provided 5-30 TB. Faculty turned to ad hoc, insecure storage practices, and appealed to campus to take action. In response, campus IT, research IT, and the Library launched a Data Storage for Faculty Pilot, offering 5 TB per faculty across five existing storage platforms. This coordinated offering delivers secure, compliant storage, reduces reliance on personal systems, and supports large-scale research needs. By aligning platforms, policies, and curation support, the initiative closes Berkeley’s storage gap, strengthens data integrity and compliance, and advances a future-oriented ecosystem that protects research, amplifies scholarly impact through responsible sharing, and fosters sustained campus partnerships. Speakers will cover how the campus partnerships developed for this pilot across these three IT organizations. Each partner brings their own areas of expertise to effectively knit together distinct service offerings into a constellation of services to be managed holistically to meet research needs: general purpose storage using an S3-compatible API, collaboration storage for desktop usage, computational storage integrated with HPC environments (including secure storage for high-risk data), and data sharing and publishing platforms. The pilot intentionally includes opportunities for faculty to engage with research data consultants, primarily from the library, as they make decisions on how to allocate their 5TB of storage. Consultants advise on which storage offerings best support the needs of not only the data, but the overall research process. These informative conversations with faculty demonstrate the variety of data management needs at the institution. These consultations will inform the University’s future approach to supporting the whole research data lifecycle and improve the faculty research experience.

It replaces manual harvesting with a robust, automated pipeline. FedHarv is architected for OA/copyright compliance and high-quality metadata, operating on a “Diamond/Gold/Hybrid Exclusive” policy. It systematically isolates “Green” (self-archived) and “Bronze” (free-to-read) content to ensure the repository only hosts files with clear re-use licenses or explicit open access status. It leverages several APIs to do so, including OpenAlex, CrossRef TDM, FundRef, DOAJ, Unpaywall, and DataCite, and packages metadata and bitstreams into customizable collection folders for an institution’s repository. FedHarv will be available under an MIT license for others to use and modify in Summer 2026.

Discussions about alternatives to traditional scholarly publishing often focus on technological platforms, workflows, economics, and financial models. Within the library community at least, the technology (and the appropriate gemstone or precious metal analogy) often dominates the discourse. This omits a critical piece of the puzzle: the content creators. The proposed project briefing re-centers researchers and readers in the scholarly publishing ecosystem and demonstrates how inter- and intra-institutional collaborations can break down silos, amplify voices, and maximize impact even in smaller scale ventures. The audience will hear directly from an early career scholar, a senior scholar, a university librarian, a digital content specialist, and a press director, and their combined efforts to bring to fruition the forthcoming Virtual Martin Luther King, Jr. multimodal monograph.

This briefing will explore two strategic approaches to transforming library digital infrastructure. The speakers will show how differing institutional contexts led to distinct solutions to the same core challenge: how to implement transformational, foundational changes to digital collections infrastructure that create sustainable long‑term resilient and fit-for-purpose systems. They will also outline their approaches to securing institutional backing, developing effective ways of working, adopting standards, user engagement, and embedding change drawing on their experiences of leading transformational digital programmes. At the University of Leeds, a multi-year Digital Library Infrastructure Project will deliver new cultural collections infrastructure to support teaching, research, collaboration and engagement, phase one has moved into production and phase two is underway. The University of Edinburgh is in the midst of a program to deliver new digital collections infrastructure that began in 2024. Their new platform has been released in Beta and is expected to replace current infrastructure in Autumn 2026.
