At the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in San Diego, Lee Rainie of the Pew Internet and American Life Project shared results from the latest (fourth) installment of their ongoing study on the Future of the Internet; they’ve been doing these since 2000. The podcasts include a conversation with plenary speaker Bernard Frischer, a leading digital humanist who discusses 3D modeling in the humanities, and Brett Bobley, CIO for the National Endowment for the Humanities, on using supercomputers in humanities research. These recordings are designed to function as an extension of the meeting, complementing the standard program, and providing an opportunity for the broader CNI community to hear from some of our key presenters and attendees.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2010 Internet2 Driving Exemplary Applications (IDEA) Award. IDEA Award winners are establishing new frontiers in the application of networking technology, and are considered role models for the entire research and education networking community. The judging committee, made up of representatives from Internet2 councils and working groups, expects an especially strong pool of applicants this year.
Open to established or new applications, the IDEA Award was created in 2006 to recognize and encourage innovative applications of advanced network technology that have made-or promise to make-the most significant impact on the research and education community. The award also presents an important opportunity for the Internet2 community to recognize members who are changing the way we think about the possibilities and uses of advanced networking.
2010 IDEA Award winners will be recognized at the Internet2 Spring 2010 Member Meeting, held in Arlington, Virginia, April 26-28, 2010 and will be provided a track session during the meeting to present information on or demonstrate their winning projects to attendees.
Entries may be submitted by any individual affiliated with an Internet2 member, a Sponsored Educational Group Participant (SEGP), or a Sponsored Participant. Alliance Library System and LearningTimes Offer Handheld Librarian 2!
More people than 2000 people attended the first ever Handheld Librarian Conference in July 2009 which featured a wide array of collaboration, learning and networking activities focused on Mobile Library Services! The Handheld Librarian 2 will continue the dialog with a 2-day online conference scheduled for February 17-18, 2010 and is now accepting registrations at http://www.handheldlibrarian.org. The program — sponsored by Alliance Library System, and LearningTimes — will include a series of wonderful keynote and featured speakers collection of available resources, discussions boards, and access to the recording of all live events for one year after the conference. More people than ever are using mobile devices for a wide variety of purposes including communication, internet access, text messaging, and entertainment. It is important that libraries provide mobile services as handheld use increases.
The conference will feature three exciting keynote talks:
· Joan K. Lippincott from the Coalition for Networked Information speaking about “Mobilizing Libraries for Today’s Students”
· Joe Murphy from Yale University speaking about “This is Now: The Mobile Library”
· Tom Peters of TAP Information Services, addressing “Morphing with Mobile”
The Handheld Librarian II will also include the real-life experiences of libraries and information professionals. We are now soliciting presentation proposals highlighting current, evolving and future issues in mobile library services.

Researchers in all fields generate and analyze enormous quantities of digital data. In fields ranging throughout the sciences and humanities, managing, preserving, and sharing these data require substantial capital and human resources and new kinds of information professionals who are able to integrate technology, content, and policy skills. This summit aims to bring together leaders in data centers, laboratories, and libraries in different organizational and disciplinary settings to share ideas and techniques for managing, preserving, and sharing large-scale research data repositories with an eye toward achieving infrastructure-independent access and stewardship. The summit will engage three kinds of leaders: those from projects with experience in integrating high-performance technologies; those from large scale collaboratories in science, social science, and the humanities; and those from institutions coping with the challenges of integrating different technologies and data collections.

The Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of California, Berkeley, with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, has been conducting a major multi-year study of how faculty needs and research practices shape their choices about scholarly communication. The final report on this work, Assessing the Future Landscape of Scholarly Communication: An Exploration of Faculty Values and Needs in Seven Disciplines is now available at http://escholarship.org/uc/cshe_fsc. This is a very important look at where faculty thinking and practice stands in regard to the changing scholarly communication environment, including a sensitive examination of differences across disciplines. Updates on this work have been presented at some CNI membership meetings; we hope to be able to host a report on this most current work in the near future.
CNI Associate Executive Director Joan Lippincott will give the keynote at this conference, providing perspectives on how users are discovering and using information today.

ABOUT THE FORUM
There is information everywhere today and access to it relies on a seamless discovery process that offers all appropriate options to the unassisted information seeker. The journey between discovery and delivery is accomplished with a variety of differing technologies and processes, many of which depend on a reliable and accurate knowledge base of coverage information. As demands on these technologies change and expand, NISO supports a variety of efforts to strengthen and improve them. This forum will explore new and innovative ways to meet user’s needs and expectations for discovery and delivery of content in the networked world.

The Spring 2010 CNI Membership Meeting will be held on April 12-13 (Monday and Tuesday) at the Baltimore Waterfront Marriott in Baltimore, MD.
