Conference on Semantic Web

August 5, 2009

A One-Day Conference Co-sponsored by CENDI, FLICC and NFAIS will be held at the National Archives in Washington, DC on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

The term “semantic web” appears everywhere – in journal articles, in conference titles, and even in new product promotional material. But what exactly is semantic web?  How does it differ from Web 2.0?   Does it really exist?  And what are its implications for the future of science and scholarly communication?  Focus of the day will begin with an overview of the Semantic Web given by Ralph R. Swick of the W3C – its definition, its objectives, and the approaches being taken to bring it to full reality.  This will be followed by real life examples of how the Semantic Web is currently taking shape.

OLE Draft Report for Comment

July 29, 2009

The OLE Project is inviting members of the CNI community to provide comments on its report.

The Open Library Environment (OLE) Project has posted a draft of its final report. We are excited to offer this report publicly to the community and welcomes comment. As a community-source project, your input is vital to the future and success of the OLE Project. You can access the report at this address:

http://oleproject.org/final-ole-project-report/

About the Open Library Environment Project:
With support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a multinational group of libraries is developing the design for an Open Library Environment (OLE), an alternative to the current model of an Integrated Library System. The goal is to produce a design document to inform open source library system development efforts, to guide future library system implementations, and to influence current Integrated Library System vendor products.
